Aggregation, carbon, and total soil nitrogen in crop-livestock-forest integration in the Eastern Amazon AGRIAMBI
Silva,Jéssica C. N.; Silva,Arystides R.; Veloso,Carlos A. C.; Dantas,Edilândia F.; Sacramento,José A. A. S. do.
ABSTRACT Sustainable agricultural production systems can improve physical attributes of soil as well as increase carbon and nitrogen stocks in soils. The objective of this study was to evaluate changes in the stability of soil aggregates and contents and stocks of carbon and nitrogen after the conversion of native forest to crop-livestock-forest integration systems in the region of Western Pará. Soil samples from five management systems (including a control) were collected at three depths in a randomized block design, with five replications. The stability of the aggregates, soil density, particle density, and total soil porosity, as well as total carbon and nitrogen and their respective stocks were evaluated. The native forest had the highest percentages...

Aluminum hydroxy-interlayered minerals and chemical properties of a subtropical Brazilian Oxisol under no-tillage and conventional tillage Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Inda,Alberto Vasconcellos; Torrent,José; Barrón,Vidal; Bayer,Cimélio.
No tillage systems significantly influence the soil system, but knowledge about the effects on the mineralogy of tropical and subtropical soils is limited. This study evaluated the long-term effects (26 years) of no-tillage (NT) on aluminum hydroxy-interlayered minerals of a subtropical Oxisol in Southern Brazil (Guarapuava, PR), compared to the same soil under conventional tillage (CT). The clay fraction (< 2 µm) in soil samples of the surface horizons of a field experiment under both management systems was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) to identify and characterize Al hydroxy-interlayered minerals before and after treatment with sodium citrate to remove intra-layer material. Soil liquid (solution) and solid phases were also characterized. The...

An iron budget during the natural iron fertilisation experiment KEOPS (Kerguelen Islands, Southern Ocean) ArchiMer
Chever, F.; Sarthou, G.; Bucciarelli, E.; Blain, S.; Bowie, A. R..
Total dissolvable iron (TDFe) was measured in the water column above and in the surrounding of the Kerguelen Plateau (Indian sector of the Southern Ocean) during the KErguelen Ocean Plateau compared Study (KEOPS) cruise. TDFe concentrations ranged from 0.90 to 65.6 nmol L-1 above the plateau and from 0.34 to 2.23 nmol L-1 offshore of the plateau. Station C1 located south of the plateau, near Heard Island, exhibited very high values (329-770 nmol L-1). Apparent particulate iron (Fe-app), calculated as the difference between the TDFe and the dissolved iron measured on board (DFe) represented 95 +/- 5% of the TDFe above the plateau, suggesting that particles and refractory colloids largely dominated the iron pool. This paper presents a budget of DFe and...

Biotracers and geotracers of depositional events in NW Mediterranean margin over the past two centuries ArchiMer
Giresse, P; Buscail, R; Charriere, B; Abassi, A; Masque, P; Sanchez-cabeza, Ja.
A detailed sedimentological and geochemical investigation was performed on slope sediments collected from the Gulf of Lions and Catalonian margins and from the northern Balearic margin. The study was based on cores, about 50 cm long. Various physiographic sites (canyons, open slopes) were selected according to the available sediment accumulation rates obtained with the Pb-210 geochronological method. At a short time scale, various parts of the slope were characterized by muddy hemipelagic sediment. Sedimentological data suggested that deposition was continuous. Total organic carbon and its hydrolysable fraction decreased downcore. Significant increase of C/N ratio downcore resulted from an early diagenetic process in response to the burial effect. However...

Changes in soil chemical and physical properties in pasture fertilised with liquid swine manure Scientia Agricola
Scheid,Douglas Leandro; Silva,Rodrigo Ferreira da; Silva,Vanderlei Rodrigues da; Ros,Clovis Orlando Da; Pinto,Marlo Adriano Bison; Gabriel,Márcia; Cherubin,Maurício Roberto.
ABSTRACT: Chemical and physical properties of soil can be altered with the successive application of liquid swine manure (LSM), also known as slurry. Therefore, monitoring the impact of LSM is essential to an assessment of the potential agronomic and environmental benefits and risks associated with management practices. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of LSM on the chemical and physical attributes of soil under pasture (Cynodon spp.), located in southern Brazil. Four areas were sampled: three areas cultivated with Cynodon spp. pasture with successive applications of 200 m3 ha–1 y–1 of LSM for three, eight and 15 years; and untreated native forest as a reference. The soil attributes evaluated were: organic carbon (OC), active (pH water)...

Characteristic of Dystrustepts in the Venezuelan Andes Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Ochoa,Guido; Oballos,Jajaira; Velásquez,Juan Carlos; López,Isabel; Manrique,Jorge.
The majority (60 %) of the soils in the Venezuelan Andes are Inceptisols, a large percentage of which are classified as Dystrustepts by the US Soil Taxonomy, Second Edition of 1999. Some of these soils were classified as Humitropepts (high organic - C-OC-soils) and Dystropepts by the Soil Taxonomy prior to 1999, but no equivalent large group was created for high-OC soils in the new Ustepts suborder. Dystrusepts developed on different materials, relief and vegetation. Their properties are closely related with the parent material. Soils developed on transported deposits or sediments have darker and thicker A horizons, a slightly acid reaction, greater CEC and OC contents than upland slope soils. Based on the previous classification into large groups...

Compressibility and water availability in Albaqualf soils under different deployment times in no-tillage Scientia Agricola
Reis,Diony Alves; Lima,Cláudia Liane Rodrigues de; Bamberg,Adilson Luís; Ribeiro,Pablo Lacerda.
ABSTRACT: The southern Brazilian lowlands have been historically used for flooded rice cultivation. Over time, heavy machinery and intensive tillage practices have resulted in soil structure disruption, soil compaction, higher production costs and lower agricultural profitability. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different deployment times of no-tillage (NT). Soil properties including bulk density (BD), compression index (CI), preconsolidation pressure (σp), bulk density at preconsolidation pressure (BDσp), degree of compactness (DC), soil water retention curve (SWRC), plant available water (PAW) and total organic carbon (TOC) content were evaluated using a 30-yr non-cultivated field (NC), adjacent to the experimental plots as a control. The BD,...

Cover plants and mineral nitrogen: effects on organic matter fractions in an oxisol under no-tillage in the cerrado Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Santos,Isis Lima dos; Caixeta,Carla Ferreira; Sousa,Alex Antônio Torres Cortês de; Figueiredo,Cícero Célio de; Ramos,Maria Lucrécia Gerosa; Carvalho,Arminda Moreira de.
Cover plants are essential for the sustainability of no-tillage systems in tropical regions. However, information on the effects of these plants and N fertilization on soil organic matter fractions is still scarce. This study evaluated the effect of cover crops with different chemical composition and of N topdressing on the labile and humified organic matter fractions of an Oxisol of the Cerrado (savanna-like vegetation). The study in a randomized complete block design was arranged in split-plots with three replications. Four cover species were tested in the plots and the presence or absence of N topdressing in the subplot. The following cover species were planted in succession to corn for eight years: Urochloa ruziziensis; Canavalia brasiliensis M. ex...

Effect of management systems and cover crops on organic matter dynamics of soil under vegetables Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Souza,Rodrigo Fernandes de; Figueiredo,Cícero Célio de; Madeira,Nuno Rodrigo; Alcântara,Flávia Aparecida de.
Vegetable production in conservation tillage has increased in Brazil, with positive effects on the soil quality. Since management systems alter the quantity and quality of organic matter, this study evaluated the influence of different management systems and cover crops on the organic matter dynamics of a dystrophic Red Latosol under vegetables. The treatments consisted of the combination of three soil tillage systems: no-tillage (NT), reduced tillage (RT) and conventional tillage (CT) and of two cover crops: maize monoculture and maize-mucuna intercrop. Vegetables were grown in the winter and the cover crops in the summer for straw production. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with four replications. Soil samples were collected...

Effect of Organic Matter on Manganese Solubility BABT
Andrade,Emilene; Miyazawa,Mário; Pavan,Marcos A.; Oliveira,Edson L. de.
The objective of this study was to re-evaluate some aspects of the relative importance of organic matter on Mn solubility in acid soil conditions. Field study showed that black oats, oil seed radish, elephant grass, lupin, leucaena, and coffee leaves serving as mulch decreased Mn solubility as compared with bare soil. The decrease in Mn solubility with plant mulch was related to increase in soil moisture content. Laboratory study showed that increasing temperature from 25 to 100ºC increased Mn solubility and total soil organic carbon was little changed; from 150 to 200ºC increased both Mn solubility and organic carbon oxidation, and up to 300ºC decreased Mn solubility and stoped organic carbon oxidation . Aluminum solubility always increased with...

Effect of Organic Matter on the Behavior and Control Effectiveness of Herbicides in Soil Planta Daninha
TAKESHITA,V.; MENDES,K.F.; ALONSO,F.G.; TORNISIELO,V.L..
ABSTRACT: With extensive use of herbicides in agricultural areas, the risk of contamination of groundwater and surface water by these products has become a worldwide concern. Practices of application or maintenance of soil organic residues that have begun to be used in agriculture for soil nutrition have demonstrated other benefits besides nutrient supplementation, such as reduced mobility and increased soil degradation of herbicides. Because it is the final destination of herbicides, soil and its constituents, especially organic matter in tropical soils, play a prominent role in processes that encompass the dynamics of herbicide molecules. In this context, it is necessary to know the influence of the organic matter and its constituents on the behavior of...

Evaluation of the heterotrophic activity in waters by microanalytical methods. ArchiMer
Bertoni, R.
The radiochemical methods proposed for evaluating heterotrophic activity in waters have been severely criticized in recent years because they are not considered to be sufficiently realistic. Thus, the possibility of directly measuring the heterotrophic consumption of naturally occurring Organic Carbon (OC) in fresh water samples incubated under controlled conditions has been evaluated. The analytical performances of two OC analyzers utilizable for this purpose are discussed here, and some examples of the results obtained by the direct measurement of OC consumption are presented. The consumption rates thus measured ranged from 11.6 to 50.2 mu gC/ 1.h. Although the technique discussed here is less sensitive than radiochemical methods, the few assumptions...

Gravimetric determination of soil organic matter BABT
Miyazawa,M.; Pavan,M.A.; Oliveira,E.L. de; Ionashiro,M.; Silva,A.K..
Studies were carried out to evaluate a gravimetric method for the determination of soil organic matter by the mass loss at 300ºC. The gravimetric method was compared with Walkley-Black, using several brazilian soils with variable chemical and physical properties. Gravimetric method was positively correlated with Walkley-Black method with the following linear regression equation: y = 3.72x + 0.29, r = 0.94. The angular coefficient 3.72 for tropical soils was greater than those reported in the literature for temperate soils (from 1.68 to 2.13). The difference was due to greater oxidation degree of the organic matter. When compared with Walkley-Black method, gravimetric technique showed certain distinct advantages such as no environmental contamination with...
